Entries in Fernando Gonzalez (5)

Photos and Video: Fernando Gonz├ílez retires at the Sony Ericsson Open

Fernando González called it a career last night at the Sony Ericsson Open and I just wanted to share with you some photos of his last match since it wasn't televised.  The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, filled with Chilean chants trying to will Gonzo to win.  Unfortunately he didn't, but he gave it his all, and his fans couldn't ask for anything more.  By the end of the match he looked tired but content as he took in his final moments on the court.   His forehand is one of the best in history and it will be greatly missed.  Enjoy!

Injury Update: Gonzo Is Out, Delpo is BACK!!!

First the bad news:

Fernando Gonzalez will have surgery next month on his right hip, and possibly his knees, side lining him for at least 9 months.  He has been out of action for most of the year, with his most recent return ending in a first round retirement at the US Open.  Lets hope for a speedy recovery for Chili's top player.

And now to the fabulous news:

We heard whispers that he was coming, but now it is confirmed,

Don't speak Spanish?  Well, neither do I, but it means that Del Potro will be playing next week in the Thailand Open, his first tourney back since his wrist injury.  Thank the Tennis Gods!  He has been missed.

US Open Day 13

Serena Williams, last year's US Open Champion lost dramatically tonight to Kim Clijsters 6-4, 7-5 due to a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct. Serena was serving down a set, and 5-6 15-30 in the second set, when she was called for a foot fault on her 2nd serve, resulting in a double fault. That's where things get UGLY.

Gonzo, Rafa, and the Rain: Men's Quarterfinal

US Open Day 11

Rain and wind were the two biggest players in tonight's men's quarter-final match between Rafael Nadal and Fernando Gonzalez.  The match was officially suspended during the second set tiebreaker, where Nadal is currently up a set and leads the tiebreaker 3-2.  Whoever wins tomorrow will have a tough road ahead; needing to play 3 straight matches in a row to get to the finals.  This is probably more of a concern for Rafa who is playing with an aggravated abdominal injury.  Hopefully they will play the 1st match tomorrow scheduled for 12:30 pm.  To be continued...........
